Autoimmune

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease, meaning that it is caused by the body's immune system attacking its own tissues. In the case of MS, the immune system attacks the myelin sheath, which is the protective covering around the nerves. This damage can lead to a variety of symptoms, including fatigue, weakness, numbness, and difficulty with balance and coordination.

Inflammation: The immune system's attack on the myelin sheath leads to inflammation, which can damage the nerves and cause symptoms such as pain, numbness, and weakness.
demyelination: The inflammation can also lead to demyelination, which is the loss of the myelin sheath. Demyelination can damage the nerves and disrupt the transmission of nerve signals, which can lead to a variety of symptoms, including fatigue, weakness, and difficulty with balance and coordination.
Axonal damage: In some cases, the inflammation and demyelination can lead to axonal damage, which is damage to the nerve fibers themselves. Axonal damage can lead to permanent neurological damage and disability.

MS is a complex disease that can affect people in different ways. The symptoms and severity of the disease can vary from person to person. There is no cure for MS, but there are treatments that can help to manage the symptoms and slow the progression of the disease.

Central nervous system

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system (CNS), which is made up of the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves.
