.aae files are sidecar files used in the editing of raw photos captured on an iPhone or iPad using the native Camera app or third-party apps that support the format. Sidecar files are additional files that provide supplementary information or settings for a primary file. In the case of .aae files, they store editing instructions for the corresponding raw image file, such as adjustments made to exposure, contrast, white balance, and other parameters.

The main advantage of .aae files is that they allow for non-destructive editing of raw photos. This means that the original raw image file remains intact, and the edits are stored separately in the .aae file. This allows photographers to experiment with different editing settings without worrying about permanently altering the original image. .aae files are also relatively small in size, so they do not take up much storage space.

Since .aae files are specific to the Apple ecosystem, they are not compatible with all photo editing software. However, there are a number of third-party apps that support .aae files, including Adobe Lightroom, Capture One, and DxO PhotoLab. These apps allow photographers to view, edit, and export raw photos with the associated .aae files.
